"Rei Arthur" impressiona, mas não pelos protagonistas

Num longa de atuações e direção irregulares, a produção técnica e as cenas de luta são os pontos fortes desse filme em cartaz nos cinemas.

Se você vai ao cinema ver "Rei Arthur" por causa dos personagens, ou por causa das histórias já conhecidas do personagem-título, esqueça. Você vai se frustrar. Este filme de Antoine Fuqua prima pela plástica. Além disso, é preciso ter em mente que o roteirista David Franzoni, que tem "Gladiador" no currículo, reinventou completamente a lenda do célebre Arthur e seus Cavaleiros da Távola Redonda. Não há magia nem bruxaria, Morgana simplesmente não existe nessa versão. Merlin até se faz presente, mas está mais para um mendigo do que um mago poderoso. O lado "conto de fadas" é deixado de lado em favor de um suposto lado "histórico" - mesmo sem sabermos se Arthur e seus cavaleiros existiram.

Os protagonistas decepcionam. O Arthur de Clive Owen é inexpressivo e distante, e mesmo nas cenas onde tenta conferir alguma dignidade ou conflito de ideais, falta-lhe o carisma inerente aos grandes heróis.

A bonitona Keira Knightley, que faz Guinevere, apresenta uma canastrice que chega a constranger. Aliás, suas caras e bocas exagerados e seus trajes de tiras de couro destoam de tudo, tornando-a inverossímil. Sua única função no filme é conferir uma aura de sensualidade, seja suja na masmorra ou seja (pouco) vestida e tatuada para a guerra. Mesmo assim, tem-se a sensação que alguma coisa está faltando nas cenas de flerte e, posteriormente, de romance com Arthur, tamanha a frieza de ambos.

Também há falhas na escolha do elenco que levam o filme a situações estranhas - por exemplo, o bispo salvo no início da história e que recruta Arthur para a missão. Seus dentes superiores de porcelana perfeitamente emparelhados contrastam com seus dentes inferiores gastos e escuros, o que faz o público rir nos takes fechados. Além dele, o filho do líder saxão está completamente perdido na trama, fazendo cara de menino emburrado e contrafeito o tempo todo.

Mas nem tudo é decepção no elenco desta aventura. Além da fotografia e da trilha sonora, três atuações são responsáveis pela atenção que a história exige. Para começar, o Lancelot-com-cara-de-brabo de Ioan Gruffudd é impecável do início ao fim, embora use um colar mostrado várias vezes que não diz a que veio. A segunda surpresa é o tosco Bors (Ray Winstone), que confere força aos cavaleiros e é o responsável pelos toques cômicos, com sua penca de filhos bastardos a tiracolo. E por fim, o cruel líder saxão de Stellan Skarsgard, que atua com segurança e mostra bem sua filosofia absurda de limpeza racial. Seu sadismo e prazer de matar não poupam nem mulheres indefesas, nem o próprio filho - o careca emburradinho.

Mas vamos ao que interessa, que é o que compensa o ingresso: o roteiro diferente e as belas cenas de luta. O filme é uma mostra claramente como os efeitos especiais e cenários gráficos não precisam chamar mais a atenção que o filme em si.

Sob ordens de Roma, Arthur e seus Cavaleiros devem viajar atá a divisa entre a Bretanha e a região dominada pelos bárbaros do norte, para resgatar uma família de nobres romanos. Para chegar lá, eles devem enfrentar inimgos tribais que habitam florestas e os saxões, que querem dizimar os bretões e estabelecer sua etnia sobre todos.

Junto com Guinevere, por quem se apaixona, Arthur descobre que a Roma que ele sempre defendeu (ainda que à força) era uma ilusão. Assim, deixa de defendê-la e sua luta passa a ser em prol da Bretanha, conforme sua consciência determina, e engalfinha-se numa guerra contra a hegemonia dos saxões.

O longa é tecnicamente perfeito, a fotografia e a trilha sonora são envolventes e a história, com um ar de épico histórico, transmite ao público valores como amizade e companheirismo. As cenas de guerra não mostram sangue, provando que não é preciso mostrar corpos dilacerados e violência em excesso para convencer. A cena do confronto sobre o lago congelado, em especial, é de uma plástica impressionante. A criatividade do roteirista é bem-vinda, mas infelizmente os protagonistas deslocados e mal-dirigidos poderiam ter alçado a produção a um patamar melhor.
